Gyrokompass, Fiber Optic Compass, GEM Elettronica

“FOG” is the now widely used acronym for fibre optic
gyrocompass, one of the most exciting technological advancements to have found
its way aboard ships. The gyrocompass was invented in the late 1800s and has
steered ships smartly for more than 100 years. But it is built on delicate
electromechanical movements that depend on being serviced frequently. FOGs,
however, devised just a few decades ago, have no moving parts and are therefore
intrinsically reliable. A heading system first used just in military vessels,
FOGs have now gone into large-scale production and are being fitted in more and
more commercial vessels. The owners of these ships see their gyro operating
expenditures drop to nothing. Along with ship’s heading, FOGs produce ship’s
roll and pitch angles. And settling is a matter of just a few minutes rather
than 5 hours for spinning mass gyrocompasses.

GEM Elettronica’s FOG
program includes a number of different specification models and embraces
inertial navigation systems too. GEM Elettronica is the proprietary owner of all
of its key FOG technologies, namely the fibre winding methods, electronics and
mathematical algorithms.
